Simple Pointers to Be Successful in Business Networking
In such an important and potentially
rewarding endeavor such as business networking, it’s only natural for an
aspiring entrepreneur to put forth his best efforts. Not only would being
active in his business network affect his standing as an entrepreneur, it will
also help improve his business’s position or influence within a peer group of
consequence—not to mention each business contact is a potential source of new
leads and referrals that further develops his business and company. So are
there any simple things to remind ourselves when attending a small get-together
of our business networks?
Make the Right Impression
More than a formal meet-and-greet, a gathering of your business network is a generous venue for new business in the form of investments in new contacts. But for such an engagement to be profitable from the start, you need to make the right impression on other entrepreneurs and businessmen. This means being presentable, approachable and amiable yet professional. You need to be readily able to introduce yourself and your business and what you can bring to the table in less than the time it takes to bore your new acquaintances into disinterest. If this means memorizing a spiel of sorts, then do so. In fact having a ready spiel or two that you can pull out for quick introductions is advisable.
Your gestures, hand motions, facial
expressions—everything needs to exude a preferable aura that tells potential business
partners and contacts that they would want to do business with you and your
company if ever the opportunity arises.
For online business networking, the usual introduction can be longer, as in a company profile website for instance. There are online networking sites for professionals and businesses that when used correctly can serve as a wonderful introduction, pitch, and calling card all in one. The meet-and-greet would come later on, and it would be more personal since such a gathering would probably be requested or suggested by a sponsor within your online network.
Keep Up Correspondence
After the small gathering, you need to
remember the names, faces, and companies of the people you think could be
potential beneficial contacts in your business networking efforts. Take the
time to send an immediate follow up in the form of a cordial thank you note of
some sort accompanied by your business card if you haven’t already given them
one. Address them by name and send a slightly different message to different
companies, to add a personal touch.
For online business networking, the task of keeping up correspondence is made significantly easier by emails, instant messaging, or comments in webpages. The task is made so simple in fact, that you may very well let it slip your mind. This is perhaps the only drawback when using the internet and Web-based software and tools to do the follow up interactions to new contacts—you can easily forget to.
Maintain Business Etiquette
And regardless if you’re doing online or offline business networking, always remember to maintain proper business etiquette. Professional courtesy is always extended to your peers in both follow up correspondence and actual meetings and gatherings.
